Program Description:
Initiated in Fall 2013, the Youth/Girls STEM Network: Computer Science/Cyber security (Y/GSN:Cyber) programs are collaborative efforts among SJSU’s Jay Pinson STEM Education program and youth-serving, community-based organizations. The programs create all-female and co-ed learning environments where youth (4th through 8th grade) can increase their computer science/cybersecurity content knowledge and skills and develop strong relationships with mentors. The programs also provide opportunities for SJSU students to gain experience in STEM-focused teaching and mentoring. The programs provide 20 hours of computer science/cybersecurity-focused content integrated into afterschool programs and has served over 150 youth to date. Populations served by the Y/GSN:Cyber programs are high need with where the majority of students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches, 78% of residents speak a language other than English at home and the average family income is 66% of the median income of the surrounding City.
